United Nations World Data Forum 2023: Report by YEDIS 

Youths Enterprise Development and Innovation Society (YEDIS) is a non-profit organization in Nigeria that promotes entrepreneurship education, youth employment, and community development. 

YEDIS Executive Director Mr. Rafiu Olaore and Mr. Patrick Ilori, YEDIS Ambassador in Austria/Europe, participated (virtually) at the United Nations World Data Forum, held in Hangzhou, China, from 23rd – 27th April 2023. 

The UNWDF2023 is themed “Towards Data that Empowers our World.” (‘Maximize the Value of Data, Harness the Power of Innovation’ and ‘Charting our Future through Data-Driven Decision-Making).  

Mr Rafiu Olaore created the following topics of discussion and meet-up events at the UNWDF2023.

  • CSO Data Analytics Platform.
  • Young Entrepreneurs and Digital Transformation.
  • Data processing in supply chain management.
  • Women in Agribusiness: Data Management in Underserved Community. 
  • Data Analytics in an Entrepreneurial Family Business.
  • Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Investing Approaches. 

Based on his consistent participation and contributions to the UN Forum, Mr Olaore ranked third at a United Nations World Data Forum 2023 Whova Community Active Member on 25th April 2023. 

Thousands of participants attended UNWDF2023 sessions and side events, including the following agenda.

  • Increasing the use of innovative sources, methods and technologies to inform decision-making: Insights from data for now initiatives. 
  • A new tomorrow for population and housing censuses? Prospect for the 2030 census round and beyond.
  • Demonstrating the power of private sector data for sustainable development.  
  • Creating care economy indicators at the local level.
  • Strengthening violence against women data and measurement for evidence-based policies. 
  • How public-private data collaboration helps government address crisis?
  • Data evolution, data revolution and data accounting. 
  • Leveraging innovation to measure and understand  poverty and inequities, including the impact of crisis on women, men, girls and boys.

The United Nations World Data Forum 2023 was very engaging and informative. It promotes networks and partnerships among the participants and reforms and advances understanding of data management in various sectors. 

YEDIS advocates for the UN SDGs in poverty reduction, quality education, gender equality, and decent work. As of April 2023, YEDIS has empowered more than 7000 underserved young people with entrepreneurship education, including girls and young women in agribusiness and creative industries, through capacity building, business plan proposal writing, digital literacy skills, material donations, and other business support service.
