Understanding Intercultural Communication Skills for Global Peace and Security. 

The Executive Director of the Youths Enterprise Development and Innovation Society (YEDIS) Rafiu Akinpelu Olaore recommended promoting global peace and security through understanding intercultural communication skills at the British Council Intercultural Communication Skills Training Course held from 16 March to 4 May 2024. Rafiu Olaore suggested that understanding individuals’ cultures and ways of interaction would promote mutual relationships, international peace, and security.

He drew from his experiences at various global conferences and events, sharing encounters with people from diverse backgrounds and highlighting issues such as stigmatization, racial discrimination, and disrespectful attitudes. Olaore emphasized the importance of “environmental scanning” when traveling to different cultural places, which involves understanding the community or country’s approach, culture, norms, greeting expressions, and languages to foster friendship and mutual relationships. He called for periodic training to enhance people’s understanding of culture, body language, and effective communication systems.

During the training, Olaore mentioned the three core values of a Nongovernmental Organization Founder, including Commitment, Creativity, and Social Responsibilities.

Additionally, he shared his personal character as a Chief Executive Officer of an NGO, which includes Adaptability, Directness, Efficiency, Punctuality, Family-orientedness, Nationalistic outlook, Future-focus, and Optimism.

Olaore expressed his appreciation to the British Council UK for introducing the Intercultural Communication Training course as a significant means of fostering team spirit, effective networking, a conducive working environment, productive partnerships, and achieving global peace and security. He also thanked the Training Facilitator, Jelena Krstajic, and other participants for their inspiring insights, enriching discussions, and invaluable contributions.
